*भगवान शिव और ‘राम-नाम'/Lord Shiva and 'Ram-Naam'* 

प्रिय स्नेही मित्रों जय श्रीकृष्णा, राधे राधे.....

     माता पार्वती भगवान शंकर से पूछती हैं,,

*प्रभु जे मुनि परमारथबादी। कहहिं राम कहुँ ब्रह्म अनादी॥*
*सेस सारदा बेद पुराना। सकल करहिं रघुपति गुन गाना॥*

भावार्थ:-हे प्रभो! जो परमार्थतत्व (ब्रह्म) के ज्ञाता और वक्ता मुनि हैं, वे श्री रामचन्द्रजी को अनादि ब्रह्म कहते हैं और शेष, सरस्वती, वेद और पुराण सभी श्री रघुनाथजी का गुण गाते हैं॥

*तुम्ह पुनि राम राम दिन राती। सादर जपहु अनँग आराती॥*
*रामु सो अवध नृपति सुत सोई। की अज अगुन अलखगति कोई॥*

भावार्थ:-और हे कामदेव के शत्रु! आप भी दिन-रात आदरपूर्वक राम-राम जपा करते हैं- ये राम वही अयोध्या के राजा के पुत्र हैं? या अजन्मे, निर्गुण और अगोचर कोई और राम हैं?॥

          त्रिलोकी में यदि श्रीराम का कोई सबसे बड़ा भक्त या उपासक है तो वे हैं भगवान शिव जो ‘राम-नाम’ महामन्त्र का निरन्तर जप करते रहते हैं ।

          भगवान शिव ने ‘राम-नाम’ कण्ठ में क्यों धारण किया है ?

          रामायण के सबसे प्राचीन आचार्य भगवान शिव ही हैं । उन्होंने राम-चरित्र का वर्णन सौ करोड़ श्लोकों में किया । शिवजी ने देवता, दैत्य और ऋषि-मुनियों में इन श्लोकों का समान बंटबारा किया तो हर एक के हिस्से में तैंतीस करोड़, तैंतीस लाख, तैंतीस हजार, तीन सौ तैंतीस श्लोक आए । एक श्लोक शेष बचा । देवता, दैत्य और ऋषि—ये तीनों एक श्लोक के लिए लड़ने-झगड़ने लगे । यह श्लोक बत्तीस अक्षर वाले अनुष्टुप छन्द में था । शिवजी ने देवता, दैत्य और ऋषि-मुनियों—प्रत्येक को दस-दस अक्षर दे दिए । तीस अक्षर बंट गए और दो अक्षर शेष रह गए । तब भगवान शिव ने देवता, दैत्य और ऋषियों से कहा—

         ‘मैं ये दो अक्षर मैं किसी को भी नहीं दूंगा । इन्हें मैं अपने कण्ठ में रखूंगा ।’

भगवान शिव और ‘राम-नाम'/Lord Shiva and 'Ram-Naam'

          ये दो अक्षर ‘रा’ और ‘म’ अर्थात् ‘राम-नाम’ हैं । यह ‘राम-नाम’ रूपी अमर-मन्त्र शिवजी के कण्ठ और जिह्वा के अग्रभाग में विराजमान है ।

भगवान शिव को ‘र’ और ‘म’ अक्षर क्यों प्रिय हैं ?

         ऐसा माना जाता है कि सती के नाम में ‘र’कार अथवा ‘म’कार नहीं है, इसलिए भगवान शिव ने सती का त्याग कर दिया । जब सती ने पर्वतराज हिमाचल के यहां जन्म लिया, तब उनका नाम ‘गिरिजा’(पार्वती) हो गया । इतने पर भी ‘शिवजी मुझे स्वीकार करेंगे या नहीं’–ऐसा सोचकर पार्वतीजी तपस्या करने लगीं । जब उन्होंने सूखे पत्ते भी खाने छोड़ दिए, तब उनका नाम ‘अपर्णा’ हो गया ।

        ‘गिरिजा’ और ‘अपर्णा’–दोनों नामों में ‘र’कार आ गया तो भगवान शिव इतने प्रसन्न हुए कि उन्होंने पार्वतीजी को अपनी अर्धांगिनी बना लिया । इसी तरह शिवजी ने गंगा को स्वीकार नहीं किया परन्तु जब गंगा का नाम ‘भागीरथी’ पड़ गया, (इसमें भी ‘र’कार है)  तब शिवजी ने उनको अपनी जटा में धारण कर लिया । इस प्रकार राम-नाम में विशेष प्रेम के कारण भगवान शिव दिन-रात राम-नाम का जप करते रहते हैं।

     *तुम्ह पुनि राम राम दिन राती।सादर जपहु अनंग आराती।।* (मानस १।१०८।४)

         राम-नाम प्रेमी भगवान शिव को राख (भस्म) और मसान (श्मशान) क्यों प्रिय हैं ?

       भगवान शिव को राख और मसान इसलिए प्रिय हैं क्योंकि राख में ‘रा’ और मसान में ‘म’ अक्षर है जिनको जोड़ देने से ‘राम’ बन जाता है और भगवान शिव का राम-नाम पर बहुत स्नेह है ।

        एक बार कुछ लोग एक मुरदे को श्मशान ले जा रहे थे और ‘राम-नाम सत्य है’ ऐसा बोल रहे थे । शिवजी ने राम-नाम सुना तो वे भी उनके साथ चल दिए । जैसे पैसों की बात सुनकर लोभी आदमी उधर खिंच जाता है, ऐसे ही राम-नाम सुनकर भगवान शिव का मन भी उन लोगों की ओर खिंच गया । अब लोगों ने मुरदे को श्मशान में ले जाकर जला दिया और वहां से लौटने लगे । शिवजी ने विचार किया कि बात क्या है ?

          अब कोई आदमी राम-नाम ले ही नहीं रहा है । उनके मन में आया कि उस मुरदे में ही कोई करामात थी, जिसके कारण ये सब लोग राम-नाम ले रहे थे, अत: मुझे उसी के पास जाना चाहिए । शिवजी ने श्मशान में जाकर देखा कि वह मुरदा तो जलकर राख हो गया है । अत: शिवजी ने उस मुरदे की राख अपने शरीर में लगा ली और वहीं मसान में रहने लगे । किसी कवि ने कहा है–

*बार-बार करत रकार व मकार ध्वनि,*
*पूरण है प्यार राम-नाम पे महेश को।।*

        कण्ठ में ‘राम-नाम’ की शक्ति से भगवान शिव द्वारा हलाहल का पान ,

*नाम प्रभाव जान सिव नीको।कालकूट फलु दीन्ह अमी को ।।* (राचमा १।१९।८)

        जब देवताओं और असुरों के द्वारा समुद्र-मंथन किया गया तो सर्वप्रथम उसमें से हलाहल विष प्रकट हुआ, जिससे सारा संसार जलने लगा । देवता और असुर भी उस कालकूट विष की ज्वाला से दग्ध होने लगे । इस पर भगवान विष्णु ने भगवान शिव से कहा कि ‘आप देवाधिदेव और हम सभी के अग्रणी महादेव हैं । इसलिए समुद्र-मंथन से उत्पन्न पहली वस्तु आपकी ही होती है, हम लोग सादर उसे आपको भेंट कर रहे हैं ।’

            भगवान शिव सोचने लगे–’यदि सृष्टि में मानव-समुदाय में कहीं भी यह विष रहे तो प्राणी अशान्त होकर जलने लगेगा । इसे सुरक्षित रखने की ऐसी जगह होनी चाहिए कि यह किसी को नुकसान न पहुंचा सके । लेकिन, यदि हलाहल विष पेट में चला गया तो मृत्यु निश्चित है और बाहर रह गया तो सारी सृष्टि भस्म हो जाएगी, इसलिए सबसे सुरक्षित स्थान तो स्वयं मेरा ही कण्ठप्रदेश है ।’

            भगवान विष्णु की प्रार्थना पर जब शिवजी उस महाविष का पान करने लगे तो शिवगणों ने हाहाकार करना प्रारम्भ कर दिया। तब भगवान भूतभावन शिव ने उन्हें आश्वासन देते हुए कहा–

           *’भगवान श्रीराम का नाम सम्पूर्ण मन्त्रों का बीज-मूल है,* वह मेरा जीवन है, मेरे सर्वांग में पूर्णत: प्रविष्ट हो चुका है, अत: अब हलाहल विष हो, प्रलय की अग्नि की ज्वाला हो या मृत्यु का मुख ही क्यों न हो, मुझे इनका किंचित भय नहीं है ।’

               इस प्रकार राम-नाम का आश्रय लेकर महाकाल ने महाविष को अपनी हथेली पर रखकर आचमन कर लिया किन्तु उसे मुंह में लेते ही भगवान शिव को अपने उदर में स्थित चराचर विश्व का ध्यान आया और वे सोचने लगे कि जिस विष की भयंकर ज्वालाओं को देवता लोग भी सहन नहीं कर सके, उसे मेरे उदरस्थ जीव कैसे सहन करेंगे?  यह ध्यान आते ही भगवान शिव ने उस विष को अपने गले में ही रोक लिया, नीचे नहीं उतरने दिया जिससे उनका कण्ठ नीला हो गया, जो दूषण (दोष) न होकर उनके लिए भूषण हो गया।

             कुछ लोगों का कहना है कि भगवान शिव द्वारा हलाहल विष का पान करना पार्वतीजी के स्थिर सौभाग्य के कारण हुआ और कुछ अन्य लोगों के अनुसार यह भगवान शिव के कण्ठ में राम-नाम है, उसी के प्रभाव के कारण संभव हुआ था।

 Meaning: Oh God!  Those who are the sages and speakers of Paramarthatattva (Brahma), they call Shri Ramachandraji as eternal God and the rest, Saraswati, Vedas and Puranas all sing the qualities of Shri Raghunathji.

 Sense: - And O Kama's enemies!  You also chant Rama-Rama respectfully day and night - this Rama is the son of the king of Ayodhya?  Or is there some other Rama unborn, nirguna and imperceptible?

           If there is one of the greatest devotees or worshipers of Shri Ram in Triloki, then they are Lord Shiva who continues to chant the 'Ram-Naam' Mahamantra.



           Why did Lord Shiva wear the Rama-naam in the gorge?



           The oldest teacher of Ramayana is Lord Shiva.  He described Rama-Charitra in a hundred crore shlokas.  When Shiva distributed these verses equally among the deities, demons and sages, then each one got thirty three crores, thirty three lakhs, thirty three thousand, three hundred thirty three verses.  One verse left.  Gods, demons and sages — all three began to fight for one verse.  This verse was in the thirty-two letter Anushtupa Chanda.  Shiva gave ten letters each to the deity, the monster and the sage.  Thirty letters were divided and two letters were left.  Then Lord Shiva said to the gods, demons and sages-



          'I will not give these two letters to anyone.  I will keep them in my gorge. '

           These two letters are ‘Ra’ and ‘M’ meaning ‘Rama-naam’.  This immortal mantra in the form of 'Rama-naam' sits in the front of Shivji's gorge and tongue.



 Why does Lord Shiva love the letters 'R' and 'M'?



          It is believed that Sati's name does not have 'Rakar' or 'M'Kar', so Lord Shiva abandoned Sati.  When Sati was born to Mountaineer Himachal, she was named 'Girija' (Parvati).  Even then 'Parvati ji started meditating' thinking 'Shivji will accept me or not'.  When he also stopped eating dried leaves, his name became ‘Aparna’.



         In both the names 'Girija' and 'Aparna' - Lord Shiva was so pleased that he made Parvatiji his ardhangini.  Similarly, Shiva did not accept Ganga but when Ganga got the name 'Bhagirathi', (it also has 'Rakar'), then Shiva took her in his jata.  In this way, Lord Shiva keeps chanting Ram-Naam day and night due to special love in Rama-nam.

          Why is Lord Shiva, the Rama-name lover, loved ashes (bhasma) and masan (cremation)?



        Lord Shiva loves ash and masan because the ash has the letter 'ra' and masan has the letter 'm', which when combined makes 'Ram' and Lord Shiva has a lot of affection for Ram.



         Once some people were taking a dead person to the crematorium and saying 'Ram-naam is true'.  When Shiva heard the name of Rama, he too walked with him.  Just as a greedy man is pulled away on hearing of money, Lord Shiva's mind was also drawn towards those people after hearing Ram's name.  Now people took the dead to the crematorium and burnt it and started returning from there.  Shivji wondered what is the matter?



           Now no man is taking the name Ram.  He came to mind that there was some ruckus in that deadline, due to which all these people were taking the name Ram, so I should go to him.  Shivji went to the crematorium and saw that the dead body was burnt to ashes.  Therefore, Shivji put the ashes of that dead body in his body and started living there.  Some poet has said-



 * Repeated movement and sound, *

 * Poorn hai pyar raam naam pe mahesh. *



         Lord Shiva's drinking of Hallahal with the power of 'Ram-Naam' in the gorge,



 * Name Effect Jan Sew Neko. Kalkut Falu Dinh Ami Ko .. * (Rachma 1.19.7)



         When the ocean was churned by the gods and demons, the first poisonous substance appeared in it, causing the whole world to burn.  Gods and asuras also started getting burnt by the flame of that Kalkuta poison.  On this, Lord Vishnu told Lord Shiva that ‘You are Devadhidev and the foremost Mahadev of all of us.  Therefore, the first thing generated by the sea-churn is yours, we are offering it to you with respect. '



             Lord Shiva started thinking - "If there is this poison anywhere in the human community in the world, then the creature will start burning unrest.  There should be a place to keep it safe so that it does not harm anyone.  But, if the venom goes to the stomach then death is certain and if left out, the whole creation will be consumed, so the safest place is mine itself. '



             When Lord Shiva started to follow that Mahavishya on the request of Lord Vishnu, the Shivganas started to cry.  Then Lord Bhootabhavana Shiva assured him and said -



            * 'Lord Shri Ram's name is the seed-root of all the mantras, * He is my life, has completely entered my congregation, so now, whether it is poison poison, flame of holocaust fire or death, why not?  Ho, I am not afraid of them at all. '

                In this way, Mahakaal took the shelter of Rama-name and placed Mahavishya on his palm, but when he took it in the mouth, Lord Shiva came to notice the gravure world in his abdomen and he started thinking that the poison of which the fiery flames could cause the gods  Could not even bear it, how will my abdominal creatures bear it?  As soon as this attention came, Lord Shiva held that poison in his throat, did not let it down, which made his gorge blue, which turned out to be corruption for him rather than corruption.



              Some people say that Lord Shiva's drinking of the poisonous venom was due to Parvatiji's stable good fortune and according to some others that it was possible due to the influence of Lord Shiva's name Ram in the gorge.
